I’ve been at this for coming up on a year now. Full-time since August. I read quite a bit about how you should treat your wfh job and your day, structure your home office, and all that stuff.
What I found is that what works for most people didn’t work for me. I think this is why I wasn’t as successful at first. It took some time to pull my shit together and figure some things out for myself. Here’s what I found.
Myth #1 – Get dressed!
Fuck pants. Seriously. I didn’t get into this hustle so I could put on britches every day.
In fact, I only wear them when I need to leave the house: grocery shopping, hauling trash, picking up my backpage hooker, etc. I try to put a limit on how often I wear real clothes. Right now, it’s three times a week. Given that it’s winter, I don’t always meet this goal.
But I have found that the more underdressed I am, the more relaxed I feel and the more productive I can be. Myth debunked!
Myth #2 – Stay out of the kitchen
They say snacking is the enemy. THE ENEMY?!?!?!?!?!
What did snacking every do to these people?
I’m working in the comfort of my own home and you think I’m not gonna hit the snacks? GTFOH bruh.
This is an absurd notion. I don’t stock my home with snacks for them to just sit there and not get eaten.
In fact, snacking is my go-to attack when I’m stuck on a project. When this fails, I go for a walk and jam to some toons, pet the dog, and other distracting activities.
Myth #3 – Set office hours
So I’m working from home and I’m not supposed to enjoy sunshine? During the winter, when we have limited daylight, I handle chores and non-work activities during the day and work in the evenings. In summer, I spend the days staying out of the intense heat with work and then go out in the evenings and at night.
Anyone reading this is more than welcome to tell me I can’t go visit Godson #1 and Baby Shark. Good luck stopping me.
Sometimes I just wake up, text the BFF aka mama, ask her if it’s cool, and then dip out.
That’s the life I live. I work when I feel like it and take days off as I see fit. In my opinion, this myth is debunked!
Make your career yours. Part of what I enjoy the most about this gig is how I get to live my life. Debunking these myths, trying new things, and being on the lookout for new and exciting ways to build income streams are all part of my life now.
It’s no secret I’ve always kind of did whatever I wanted to do at work. But to an extent, I still had to play by the rules of the bossman/ownerman.
Now my career is as elastic as the band in the mesh shorts I’m wearing. #TEAMNOBRITCHES
